1960年代よりポップ・アート運動にも参加し大きな影響を与え、イギリスの20世紀の現代芸術を代表し、もっとも大衆性を勝ち得たアーティストの一人である。近年の絵画に見られる複数の視点や遠近法の採用、レーザー・コピー、フォト・コピーの応用など、その好奇心と探究心は衰えをしらない。

デイヴィッド・ホックニーの略歴

1937年(昭和12年): 7月9日(金)、イギリスのブラッドフォード・ソルテアに生まれる。
1953年(昭和28年): ブラッドフォード美術学校に入学。
1963年(昭和38年): ホックニーは画商ジョン・カスミンを通じて作品を発表するようになる。; パリ・ビエンナーレでグラフィック賞受賞。ロンドン・カスミン・ギャラリーで初の個展開催。作品は完売する。
ニューヨークを訪れ、アンディ・ウォーホルと出会う。
1964年(昭和39年): ロサンゼルスで、当時まだ比較的新しい画材であったアクリル素材でプールを描いた作品群を制作することになった。
第８回ルガーノ国際素描版画展で一等賞を受賞。ニューヨークのアラン・ギャラリー、ニューヨーク近代美術館で、アメリカにおける初個展を開催。
1965年(昭和40年): 第７回リュブリアナ国際グラフィック・アート展で受賞、買い上げとなる。
1967年(昭和42年): リヴァプールのウォーカー・アート・ギャラリーで開催される「ジョン・ムーアズ・リヴァプール」展で絵画賞受賞。
1975年(昭和50年): ストラヴィンスキー作「放蕩者の遍歴」の舞台装置と衣装を手掛ける。
1977年(昭和52年): モーツァルト作「魔笛」の舞台装置と衣装を手がける。
1982年(昭和57年): ポラロイド・コラージュやフォトコラージュを数多く制作する。
1989年(昭和64年/平成元年): 第１回高松宮殿下記念世界文化賞を受賞。
AT&Tとキャノンのレーザー・ファックスで世界中に送信する。第２０回サンパウロ・ビエンナーレに、ファックスを使用した作品を出品。
1995年(平成7年): 愛犬スタンリーとブージーの肖像画を描きはじめる。
1998年(平成10年): 60枚のキャンバスを使った油彩「ビッガー・グランド・キャニオン」制作。
